How do I check if my website is down for everyone or just me?
Enter your address above. The request comes from our server, not your computer, so it settles the question: if we get a page back, the site is up and the problem is on your side (often your office network or an old copy your browser saved). If we get nothing back, it is genuinely down.
The site loads for me. Could it still be down for customers?
Yes. Your browser saves a copy of sites you visit often, so you can be looking at yesterday’s site while new visitors get an error. Checking from a second connection, like this tool, is the only way to see what a stranger sees.
My site is down. What do I do first?
Ring or email whoever hosts it; most outages are hosting problems and are fixed on their side. Note the time you found it. And do not agree to a rebuild on the back of an outage: a site that went down is not a site that needs replacing, any more than a car with a flat battery needs scrapping.
Is this the same check the paid report runs?
It is the report’s opening move: request the page, follow the redirects, time the answer. The report’s version is more patient, giving a failing site three separate attempts before calling it down, and then runs roughly twenty further checks on what comes back.
